Press Release:

Artistic Diversity and Community Involvement Come Together as Shady Lea Mill Opens Its Doors:

Artists and craftsman host 11th annual Open Studios event to aid local charities.

The historic Shady Lea Mill, situated on the scenic Matatuxet River in North Kingstown, houses over 40 artists, artisans, and craftsmen working in various media. On Sunday December 7th from noon to 5pm, Shady Lea Mill will host Open Studios in order for each artisan to demonstrate their area of expertise and their work. Just in time for holiday shopping, some of Rhode Island’s many talented residents open their doors to the public. Featuring exciting items such as handmade bath products, painting, sculpture, blown and fused glass, furniture and jewelry, Shady Lea mill houses a diverse creative energy.span>

As an addition to this year’s event, the artists of Shady Lea Mill are asking guests to bring non-perishable food items as well as new or gently used winter outerwear to fill North Kingstown Food Bank’s empty shelves, and help Crossroads RI to warm RI’s homeless community. As more and more families face financially difficult times, charitable organizations call for community help. With hundreds of visitors coming through Shady Lea Mill, the Open Studios is a great time to get people together in donating to hard-working local charities. Collection bins will be placed throughout the mill.

Nothing can adorn the body (and soul!) as well as Susan Hayward’s jewelry work. Not many people are aware of the off-loom bead weaving techniques she uses. Hayward’s magnificent handwork includes methods handed down for generations in almost every culture around the world, as well as new and exciting directions taken by contemporary bead artists. “I'm also working on a series of 'au naturale' necklaces,” explained Hayward, “composed of leaves, wood, moss, seeds and other natural found objects.” These striking pieces work not only as jewelry, but as wall art!

Home interiors find fresh creativity with Shady Lea Mill designers and furniture artists. RI Monthly “Best of Rhode Island” Upholstery and Slipcovers winners, Sew Many Things, are joined by Joy Sawyer Interior Design, and PEKE Studio. Joy Sawyer, owner and interior designer created beautiful and functional living spaces for the Newport Show House. PEKE Studio, a collaboration between artists/designers Barbara Perrino and Kathy Kennedy, is new to Shady Lea this fall. Together, Perrino and Kennedy have over forty years experience in the fine arts and interior design fields.

The number of open studio participants has grown over the last two years as new people have come into the mill. Situated at the entrance and welcoming visitors to experience the magic of creating glass art, Anchor Bend Glassworks is a diverse team of Newport natives, and a cornerstone of Shady Lea. On display at the Open Studios will be new, original and innovative glass designs, as well as their nationally demanded products. The guys at Anchor Bend are excited to fire up for the Open Studios and demonstrate the spectacular skill and craftsmanship of glassblowing.
